Job Search Tools: Use the KSA Framework to Tell Your Story
As you craft Your Story for resumes, interviews, and networking, ask: “What do I bring to the table?” The KSA Framework of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities can help you gather your thoughts and communicate them effectiely.
Knowledge is what you know. This includes facts, concepts, and techniques you’ve learned through school, training, or experience. Examples: grant writing, case management, marketing strategies, or leadership approaches. Think of knowledge as the “what” behind your expertise.
Skills are the “how.” They’re the practical application of knowledge and the observable actions you can perform. For instance, knowing about grant writing is knowledge, but being able to write a successful grant proposal is a skill. Employers look for these tangible, demonstrable competencies.
Abilities go deeper. They’re your natural capacities, aptitudes, and talents that allow you to thrive in different situations. Examples include staying calm under pressure, multitasking effectively, or being comfortable with uncertainty. Abilities often set you apart because they show how you handle challenges beyond technical know-how.
When you frame your resume, cover letters, and interview answers around KSAs, you give employers a clear picture of not just what you know, but what you can do and how you’ll adapt. It’s a holistic way to showcase your value.
So as you step into the job market, ask yourself:
• What knowledge have I gained?
• What skills can I demonstrate?
• What abilities make me uniquely effective?
Answering these questions will help you present yourself with confidence and clarity.
